The YOSAKOI Soran Festival in Hokkaido

The YOSAKOI Soran Festival in Sapporo dates back to 1992. Although this festival is relatively new in the history of Japan, it represents an interesting combination of Soran Bushi, a folk song from Hokkaido, and the original Yosakoi Festival from Kochi Prefecture. Dancers in colorful costumes dance to melodies adapted from Soran Bushi with their clappers in hand. Enjoying a lot of freedom in terms of choreography, costumes and adaptations of Soran Bushi, those dancers parade through the streets of Sapporo dancing. This festival has grown into one of the major summer festivals in Japan now welcoming about 270 dance teams (27,000 participants) and 2 million spectators.
